The annual Strawberry Festival in Vanceboro





Strawberries are in season and Craven County’s best-known celebration of the juicy fruit is this weekend April 29th and 30th.The carnival atmosphere kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday and continues to 10 p.m., with rides, crafts, food and vendors. About 40 vendors have signed up to sell food and merchandise.

Friday evening entertainment begins at 5 p.m., with the music of Adam Windley. That is followed by the rock and rhythm and blues music of “Soundbyte” on the main stage from 7 to 10 p.m.

The parade lineup begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, and the procession steps off an hour later.

The parade starts on the north end of town near the Handy Mart, on Main Street, which is U.S. 17. The route goes along Main Street to the stop light, takes a left and continues to the school.

The parade lineup includes Sudan Shriners trucks, a variety of floats and fire and rescue, and entries by local civic groups and churches.

Saturday’s music begins at 10:30 a.m. with Band of Believers. Lizbeth Holt follows at noon, with Band of Believers returning for an hour at 1 p.m. Dance Illusion takes the stage at 2 p.m., followed by Bobby Acker.

Barbecue and chicken plates go on sale at 11 a.m.
