The annual Strawberry Festival in Vanceboro

Strawberries are in season and Craven County’s best-known celebration of the juicy fruit is this weekend April 29th and 30th.The carnival atmosphere kicks off at 5 p.m. Friday and continues to 10 p.m., with rides, crafts, food and vendors. About 40 vendors have signed up to sell food and merchandise.

Friday evening entertainment begins at 5 p.m., with the music of Adam Windley. That is followed by the rock and rhythm and blues music of “Soundbyte” on the main stage from 7 to 10 p.m.

The parade lineup begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, and the procession steps off an hour later.

The parade starts on the north end of town near the Handy Mart, on Main Street, which is U.S. 17. The route goes along Main Street to the stop light, takes a left and continues to the school.

The parade lineup includes Sudan Shriners trucks, a variety of floats and fire and rescue, and entries by local civic groups and churches.

Saturday’s music begins at 10:30 a.m. with Band of Believers. Lizbeth Holt follows at noon, with Band of Believers returning for an hour at 1 p.m. Dance Illusion takes the stage at 2 p.m., followed by Bobby Acker.

Barbecue and chicken plates go on sale at 11 a.m.

The New Bern Preservation Foundation will hold its annual Antique Show at the New Riverfront Convention Center Feb. 11 to 13 2011. More than 45 professional dealers will offer 18th through 20th century furniture, decorative items and memorabilia — literally something for everyone of every age. Come enjoy the largest antique show east of Raleigh featuring a variety of antique dealers selling quality goods such as furniture, linens, silver, toys, glassware and much more! Daily verbal evaluations of your treasures are also available. On Feb. 12 and 13 2011, identifiers will be available to evaluate personal items brought to the show. Tickets are $7.50 at the door and good for admission each of the three days. The preservation group was chartered in August of 1972 and began saving buildings and upgrading neighborhoods. A small group of volunteers worked alone until 1981 when they hired the first professional executive director. Nearly 60 structures have been directly saved by the foundation. NAR consumer profile report has been for years great indicator of Real Estate market conditions and trends. 2010 report has some great great points for professionals but also for general public. Take a few minutes and check it out.
To highlight some:
Even with several years of price declines, the typical seller who purchased a home eight years ago experienced a median equity gain of $33,000, a 24 percent increase, while sellers who were in their homes for 11 to 15 years saw a median gain of 40 percent

The number of first-time home buyers rose to a record high 50 percent of all home sales from 47 percent in the 2009 study, building on success of the home buyer tax credit which began in 2009. The previous cyclical high for first-time buyers was 44 percent in 1991; records date back to 1981
Eighty-five percent of home buyers who used the Internet to search for a home purchased through a real estate agent, while 70 percent of non-Internet users were more likely to purchase directly from a builder or from an owner they already knew in a private transaction.
Not surprisingly, for-sale-by-owner transactions reached a record low, accounting for 9 percent of sales in the 2010 study, down from 11 percent in 2009. The share of homes sold without professional representation has trended down since reaching a cyclical peak of 18 percent in 1997. "In a market as challenging as today, it's clear most home sellers need professional assistance.

The Twin Rivers Quilters Guild hosts a two-day "Quilts for 300 Years" exhibit beginning Friday at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center.

The judged show, featuring more than 300 quilts, includes items from the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s.

The guild designed, made and donated a quilt for New Bern's 300th anniversary, depicting the city's history.

Tryon Palace Theater gets into the Halloween weekend spirit Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. performance of "WHIT presents Dracula."

It entails a 19th century Gothic classic, via the images of a radio in its heyday - considered somewhat magical at the time.

Attendees become the studio audience for a 1940s radio drama at New Bern's radio station of the era, WHIT.

Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for students and free with regular Palace admission.

Two historical highway markers will be dedicated Saturday to honor the African-American legacy in the city of New Bern.

They honor two notable structures - Andrew's Chapel and King Solomon Lodge. The chapel was established in 1802 to serve Methodist congregations. The lodge was first erected in 1870 as the first African-American Masonic lodge in the state.

A torchiere light is great for bouncing light off of the ceiling and back down on the room.Skylights and solar tubes are natural alternatives for adding light to a room.

4. Limit the number of accessories to avoid the cluttered feeling.

5. The floor and the ceiling are the fifth and sixth walls of every room. A light-colored flooring such as light oak or a light-colored carpet will make the room appear brighter and more open. The same applies to the ceiling—use a light color or white to "open up" the space above.

Colonial ship scheduled to arrive today for 300th Anniversary Jubilee Weekend

The 16th century replica ship Elizabeth II is scheduled to arrive at the Grand Marina on the New Bern waterfront Wednesday afternoon for the New Bern Jubilee Weekend. It will remain docked behind The Hilton through the weekend, hosting area school groups Thursday and Friday. There will be no admission to tour the ship during the weekend.

The original Elizabeth was one of seven vessels in Sir Walter Raleigh's military expedition to the New World in 1885.

Thursday's Jubilee public event is the Jubilee Flotilla, with boats large and small scheduled to begin their cruise along the New Bern waterfront at 8 p.m.

Boat owners have been encouraged to decorate with lights and a 300th theme.

Haiti dance troupe to perform in New Bern

The Resurrection Dance Theater from Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, will be making a stop in New Bern from Sept. 13 to 15, including performances for 2,500 school children and a public performance at Garber United Methodist Church. Make sure not to miss this exelent show by 11 dancers and drummers are all from the St. Joseph's Home for Boys in Haiti.

The internationally recognized dance troupe members are all from the St. Joseph's Home for Boys in Haiti. s, former street children and child slaves in Haiti who have performed all over the United States and Canada, including a performance before the Pope on World Youth Day in Canada.

The public performance, which is sponsored by Hearts With Haiti and Garber United Methodist Church, will be in Garber's Morris Hall at 7 p.m. Morris Hall is located at 4202 Country Club Road in Trent Woods.

For ticket information, contact the church office at 252-637-4022. Tickets for the public performance are $5 and credit card payment is accepted by phone. All proceeds from the performance will be donated to the St. Joseph's Home for Boys to help rebuild their home in Haiti.

New Bern is getting ready for 2010 Bike Rally

Last year the rally was moved to New Bern from Myrtle Beach. Allen said about 5,000 people turned out for the rally despite two days of heavy rain.

This year's rally will feature some of the same attractions as last year, as well as some additional features. And with absolutely fabulous forecast for this coming weekend thousands are expected to show.

Ride-In Bike Show Saturday Entry fee: $10

On Saturday evening, the musical entertainment will move downtown to the New Bern Farmer's Market on South Front Street for the First Annual Spring Rally Block Party that will feature two live bands.

The block party is a joint venture between Harley-Davidson of New Bern and the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce, Allen said. It will be open to local residents and rally attendees. Admission will be $5.

• Income limits of $125,000 for individuals and $225,000 for married couples filing jointly apply to all sales occurring after Nov. 6, 2009.
• The income limits for sales occurring on or after January 1, 2009 and on or before November 6, 2009 are $75,000 for individual taxpayers and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.
• Homes priced above $800,000 are not eligible for either the first-time home buyer tax credit or the repeat home buyer tax credit.
• Expanded tax credit benefits apply to members of the military, the foreign service and the intelligence community.
• Home purchases in 2010 may be claimed on an amended 2009 income tax return.
• Persons who are claimed as dependents by a taxpayer or who are under age 18 do not qualify for a tax credit.
• Home purchases from relatives of the taxpayer or the taxpayer’s spouse do not qualify for the tax credit. The IRS defines relatives as ancestors (parent, grandparent, etc.), lineal descendants (child, grandchildren, etc.) and spouses.
• Married couples are not eligible to claim the first-time home buyer tax credit if either spouse has previously owned a home. They may, however, qualify for the repeat home buyer tax credit.
• Neither the first-time home buyer tax credit nor the repeat home buyer tax credit have to be repaid unless the home is sold or ceases to be used as the buyer’s principal residence within three years after the initial purchase.
• Taxpayers must submit a copy of the HUD-1 settlement statement and IRS Form 5405 to claim either the first-time home buyer tax credit or the repeat home buyer tax credit.

Economic situation is becoming more obvious even in the sleepy New Bern NC. This week, a downtown New Bern hotel will be sold to the highest bidder to help settle a debt that exceeds $2 million.

The Days Hotel in Five Points will be sold “lock, stock and barrel” during a public auction Thursday at 10 a.m.

The hotel closed in May after its owners, Connecticut Avenue Partners, were unable to pay their creditors.

The successful bidder will get not only the hotel property, but also its furnishings. Within the past year, the hotel had major interior renovations, including restaurant, lobby and guestroom upgrades. Right now there is no telling what kind of money will hotel bring in but with its great location it sure can turn up to be great business opportunity.

Last night we were treated to a beautiful summer night of some awesome movie music with NC symphony. New Bern music lovers came in huge numbers and made this a spectacular event as always. Evening stared with Tryon Palace drummers and a surprise marriage proposal. Concert was held in Tryon Palace historic gardens overlooking Trent River. What a glorious night! Conducted by William Henry Curry in his 14th season with NC symphony, orchestra was magnificent.

Public Marina coming to New Bern

Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation has received a $646,650 federal grant to create a public marina for transient boaters on Jack's Island at Lawson Creek Park.

The money comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and is intended specifically for boating infrastructure projects. The grant is expected to pay for nearly half of a $1.4 million construction project that will create a 14-slip marina.

Of those, 12 slips would be available to the public, one would be for a "pump out" boat and one for a safety vessel. Dubbed the River History Marina, it would provide the first public, short-term dockage available in New Bern.

The marina is designed for 35- to 40-foot boats that would dock there no longer than 10 days. Boaters would be charged a base fee, and then $1.50 a foot per vessel.

The marina project also includes a dock master's office that is a replica of the Neuse River Lighthouse.

The annual New Bern Spring Historic Homes and Gardens Tour features 16 historic homes and gardens.

The Friday and Saturday tour is sponsored by the New Bern Historical Society and the New Bern Preservation Foundation, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Many of the areas historic churches will also be open and will offer music. Homemade bagged lunches and baked goods will be available at the restored Pinnix Drug Store.

The Tryon Palace Gardens will be open to the public for the tour weekend. Spring Homes Tour ticket holders will receive a discount on the Governor's Pass to tour the Palace and the New Bern Academy.

All tour ticket holders are also invited to a special reception at Carolina Creations at 317 Pollock St. on Friday from 5-7 p.m. There are also numerous other activities downtown.

The red carpet event is aiming to raise money for the Craven County animal shelter along with other rescue organizations and animal foster programs. Participants can look forward to a silent auction, dinner from downtown restaurants, music, and entertainment.

The event will be held Saturday night, Feb 14, at 6 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Banquet Hall in downtown New Bern. Tickets for the event can be purchased for $50 at Nauti Paws Pet Boutique and Bakery, also in New Bern.

Weather forecasters expect temperatures to reach the low to mid teens in New Bern on Saturday morning, the coldest air the area has felt in about five years. Officials are advising people to stay indoors and take their plants and pets with them. Cold air has already caused several accidents around the county as we were seeing some ice on the roads. Officials are warning drivers to watch out for slick bridges and overpasses the next several days. A cold front will begin to move through the area today, bringing the coldest arctic air New Bern will feel this winter and high temperatures are expected to stay in low 30s for the next 3-4 days. Some local golf courses are closing as they are covering greens in order to prevent possible serious damage to the facilities.
With sinking temperatures local Charity organizations are gearing up to offer as much assistance as well as to educate public about safety and hypothermia. People must understand how to safely heat their homes when temperatures drop into the teens as that is something this area is not used to. If you have extra winter clothing or blankets please remember Religious Community Services located on 919 George St (252) 633-2767 as they have people lined up and they are always doing such a phenomenal job helping New Bern area's less fortunate.

Be vary careful with your fuel and heating systems and drive safe!

Wow it is December ......again…..and we realize that 2008 is almost over!
2008 Has been a very challenging year for most of us with a declining Real Estate Market, summer of astronomical gas prices, stock market roller coaster, elections and last how about Clay Aiken being gay!

This is a dramatic video (30-second, very short) about how to deal with acommon kitchen fire ... oil in a frying pan. Read the following Introduction, then watch the show ... It's a real eye-opener!!
At the Fire Fighting Training school they would demonstrate this with a deep fat fryer set on the fire field. An instructor would don a fire suit and using an 8 oz cup at the end of a 10 foot pole, toss water onto the grease fire.
The results got the attention of the students. The water,being heavier than oil, sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out. On the open field, it became a thirty foot high fireball that resembled a nuclear blast. Inside the confines of a kitchen, the fire ball hits the ceiling and fills the entire room. Also, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup of either creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite.

The Thankful Parrot

A man named Jack received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a bad attitude and an even worse and limited vocabulary. Every word out of the bird's mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity.

As he was experienced with birds, Jack tried and tried to change the bird's attitude by consistently saying only polite words, playing soft music and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird's vocabulary.

Finally, Jack was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot yelled back. Jack shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder. Jack, in desperation, threw up his hands, grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.

For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed. Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.

Fearing that he'd hurt the parrot, Jack quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto Jack’s outstretched arms and said,

"I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and even cruder actions. I'm sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend to do everything I can to correct my disrespectful and unforgivable behavior."

Jack was stunned at the change in the bird's attitude and vocabulary. As he was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his behavior, the bird continued, "May I ask what the turkey did?”

If you have been paying close attention to real estate market in the past two years as most of us have you have witnessed a steady decline, decline and some more decline in prices as well as sales. However you must have noticed last four weeks different trend. Sales are up almost 10% in most of the markets as well as sales prices. That might not seam significant but if you take in to consideration that we are entering holiday season witch is typically our slowest time of a year that number looks amazing. These catch phrases have become part of our lexicon as we’ve become more aware of our impact on the environment and our role in protecting it. As a homeowner, there are some simple, inexpensive steps you can take to make your home energy-efficient. Get started on the road to being “green” with these five tips:

Change Your Light Bulbs
By replacing just five incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs, you can save $100 per year on electric bills while using up to 75 percent less energy and removing greenhouse gases from the environment.

Buy ENERGY STAR® Appliances
ENERGY STAR-qualified appliances, such as refrigerators, washers and air conditioners, meet a higher level of energy efficiency set by the Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy than standard models. According to ENERGY STAR, if just one in 10 homes used ENERGY STAR-qualified appliances, the impact could be compared to planting 1.7 million new acres of trees. And, switching to these appliances is not only good for the environment, but easy on your pocketbook. Although these appliances may costs more, you can reduce your energy bill by $80 per year.

Seal Up
Cracks and air leaks represent cash seeping from your doors and windows. Get rid of air leaks in doors, windows and other areas by caulking gaps and cracks. This will help decrease your heating and air conditioning bill. But make sure you use silicone sealants. Acrylic caulk tends to shrink, while silicone sealants are waterproof and won’t shrink or crack, creating less waste.

Use Less Water
Did you know that roughly 60 percent of a home's water consumption takes place in the bathroom, according to the California Urban Water Conservation Council? The largest culprit is the toilet, which accounts for 27 percent of your household supply every year. By installing low-flow toilets, showerheads and faucets, you can save thousands of gallons of water each year. In addition, replace leaky fixtures. That slow-dripping faucet can waste as much as 2,400 gallons of water per year.

Adjust the Thermostat
When adjusting your home’s thermostat, the rule of thumb should be: turn up the dial in the summer and down in the winter. Lowering the temperature by just one degree will reduce your electrical costs. And if you use a programmable thermostat, you can program your air-conditioning and heating systems to reduce output while no one is at home or at night while you sleep. Ceiling fans are also helpful in circulating the air to keep the room cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Craven County 2008/2009 school year is starting on 25th of August this year and here is just a brief look at our school system.
Craven County School District consists of 22 schools. 14 elementary 5 middle and 3 high schools that are attend by aprox. 15,000 students today. With 1,900 employees craven County Schools is the second larges employer in the county. Over the past 10 years average reading and math scores have increased for more then 20% and proficiency goals for reading math and writing are 80%. Middle school drop out rate is 0% and high school drop out rate is less then 4%.
School safety is a shared responsibility of the parents, educators, community as well as students and it is ensured with everyone's participation and open dialogue.

Boating safety, inspections in New Bern NC

Here in New Bern North Carolina with all of the beautiful water ways you have to get in to boating, sooner or late. Safety's a big thing in boating and a good inspection simply makes your chances of having a problem a lot less.
Members of a New Bern group hope they can reduce the number of accidents in area waters by providing free boat inspections Aug. 16 and 17.
The Cape Lookout Sail and Power Squadron, a part of the U.S. Power Squadron that formed out of the Boston Yacht Club in 1914 to help stranded vessels off the New England coast, offers courses in public boating, sailing, engine maintenance, navigation, marine electronics, seamanship, safety and other subjects. The organization has about 13 certified inspectors who will check boats at the Lawson Creek Park boat ramp.
The squadron will inspect boats at the Lawson Creek Park boat launch from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 16 and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17. Call 637-1941 for more information about the inspections.
"All of these fellows have been longtime boaters," he said. "They know what to look for."
We are looking forward to a good turn out as this will improve all of ours safety.

State Nickname, The Tar Heel State - Historians have recorded that the principal products during the early history of North Carolina were tar, pitch, and turpentine that were produced in the pine woods of the state. There are several stories as to how North Carolinians came to be called Tar Heels. The best known emerged during the Civil War. Troops from North Carolina, during a fierce battle in Virginia, stuck to their posts, successfully fighting it out alone. It was said that President Jefferson Davis wanted to buy all the tar in North Carolina to make Virginians stick fast, too. General Robert E. Lee, upon hearing of the incident, said “God bless the Tar Heel boys”, and from that they took the name. Over the years, the name has become widely accepted, with the correct spelling consisting of two words, Tar Heels.

State Motto, Esse Quam Videri - Esse Quam Videri (To be rather than to seem) The General Assembly of 1893 adopted the words "Esse Quam Videri" as the State's motto and directed that these words with the date "20 May, 1775," be placed with our Coat of Arms upon the Great Seal of the State
The motto is a literal translation of a phrase from a sentence in Cicero's "On Friendship" (De Amicitia, chapter 26). The complete sentence in Latin is:
Virtute enim ipsa non tam multi praediti esse quam videri volunt (Fewer possess virtue, than those who wish us to believe that they possess it).
Until the act of 1893, North Carolina had no motto, being one of the few states--and the only one of the original thirteen--without one.
What a great motto that can and should be applied to all the aspects of our lives, today as much as ever!

State Vegetable, Sweet Potato - The sweet potato was officially designated the State Vegetable by the General Assembly of 1995.
Students at a Wilson County school petitioned the North Carolina General Assembly for the establishment of the sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) as the Official State Vegetable. Their assignment led to the creation of this state symbol. The sweet potato is high in vitamins A and C and low in fat and was grown in North Carolina before the European colonization of North America.
According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, North Carolina is the largest producer of sweet potatoes in the nation, harvesting more than 700 million pounds of the vegetable in 2006, and thus providing more than 40% of the 1.6 billion pounds produced in the United States.

State Tree, Pine - The pine was officially designated as the State Tree by the General Assembly of 1963. Contrary to popular belief, no specific type of pine tree was specified in the Session Law. Eight types are considered indigenous to the state, including the eastern white, loblolly, longleaf, pitch, pond, shortleaf, table mountain, and virginia. The pine is the most common of the trees found in North Carolina, as well as the most important one in the history of our State. During the Colonial and early Statehood periods, the pine was a vital part of the economy of North Carolina. From it came many of the "naval stores" - resin, turpentine, and timber - needed by merchants and the navy for their ships. The pine has continued to supply North Carolina with many important wood products, particularly in the building industry.
According to North Carolina Forests, 2002 (published by the US Department of Agriculture Forest Service), softwood species (like pine, hemlock, and spruce) made up 34% of the state's total wood volume, with the loblolly pine being the predominant species.

In the process of gathering nectar to make honey, bees pollinate seed-bearing plants that provide us with food and with fiber for clothing. Pollination is biggest Honey Bee’s contribution to North Carolina crops.
